Winter break gives no break from homework

Winter vacation is supposed to be a break from work, a time to relax, hang out with friends and travel to warmer climates. But with standards rising and the state's English tests coming next month, children across the Lower Hudson Valley are facing something they dread during the year - homework. Nicholas Wasilewski, a fourth-grader in Eastchester, has had to practice reading comprehension and short-answer questions for 45 minutes a day this vacation. "I don't like it," said Nicholas, 10. "We do enough work in school." But his mother, Crista Wasilewski, who teaches third grade in New Rochelle, says 45 minutes a day won't kill the kids. "The more prep work, the better off the kids are," she said. This week, a 10-year-old White Plains boy took the debate into his own hands.

Affluent, Gen X and Boomers Respond to Vacation Package Savings

NEW YORK, NY -- (MARKET WIRE) -- December 27, 2006 -- What do Gen X and Baby Boomers have in common with affluent Americans? Both groups are more likely to take a tour or vacation package knowing they can save time or money. These are among findings of a consumer survey of 1,000 adults conducted for USTOA. A full 70% of the following groups said they were more likely to buy a tour or vacation package based on savings: "Among other things the survey reveals that the higher a person's income, the more likely they are to respond to time and dollar savings," says Bob Whitley, USTOA president.
