Volunteer vacation in Vietnam blends travel with help and hope

HOI AN, Vietnam - Colorful lanterns hung from baroque Asian cornices and concaved roof tiles glowed in the setting sun as I gunned my scooter down a narrow street hugging the Thu Bon River. It was the end of another workday, and this ancient city buzzed with the sounds of moped engines, their high-pitched horns blaring out as whole families rode home, embracing single file on the tiny conveyances my friend, Jake Klotz, and I lovingly referred to as "scoot-scoots." GMA observes silence during 6-day vacation

Daniel Smith last Friday night from the Makati City jail to the United States Embassy in Manila without official orders from the court. When she arrived here last Dec. 27, Mrs. Arroyo immediately met with various officials from the Cordillera region and Northern Luzon to discuss the implementation of priority projects of her administration, but the details of the meeting were not revealed to the public.
